Goddess of beauty and love. Daughter of Zeus and Dione, she is thought to have been born on a coast of Cyprus. From there the wind Zephyrus pushed her into the foamy sea (from where her name comes) on a huge shell, where she was welcomed by the Hours, who dressed her, decorated her and brought her up to Olympus. She was Hephaestus' wife. Among the many myths about Venus, the most famous is the role it played in the beginning of the Trojan War. It all began when Athena, Hera and Aphrodite claimed the title of the most beautiful goddess judged by Paris, the King of Troy, who herded his father's sheep on Ida. Paris gave the title to Aphrodite, who gave him the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen, wife of the king of Sparta Menelaus. Helen's capture by Paris was the cause of the Trojan War.
