The ugly but good-hearted god of fire, volcanoes and metallurgy, was the son of Zeus and Hera, was born according to the legend in Lemnos and was educated by the Naxos blacksmith, Cedalion, who taught the new god to forge and work the metals. Regarding the first years of his life and disability, tradition says that Hera just gave birth to Hephaestus on Olympus, asked to see her baby. But once he saw the lame and black-haired infant he was furious and threw it from Olympus. Hephaestus ended up in the Ocean, where he was picked by Thetis and Eurynome and spent the first years of his life at the palace of Nereus. Hephaestus was, for the ancient Greeks, the personification of fire, which thus helped the human race in its early stages, through the mediation of Prometheus.
